Christians have been urged to prioritize genuine service marked by humility, and refrain from attitudes of pride or superiority over others.
The call was made yesterday by Rt. Rev. Robert K. Muhiirwa Akiiki, Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, during his homily at the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper at Virika Cathedral, which included the washing of the feet and marked the beginning of the Easter Triduum.
Bishop Muhiirwa encouraged the faithful to emulate Christ’s humility, demonstrated when He washed the feet, the lowest part of the body of His disciples an act that prepared them for the mission that lay ahead.
He further emphasized that titles and honors should never lead anyone to boast or consider themselves better than others, whether at work or at home. Instead, he called on Christians to serve with humility, through which they can receive God’s blessings and grace.

The Bishop also highlighted the need for a change in mindset among Ugandans regarding practical skills. He observed that such skills are often looked down upon as being for the poor, yet they offer real opportunities in today’s job market. He pointed to professions such as mechanics, hairdressing, and tailoring, noting that Christ Himself was known as the son of a carpenter.
He challenged the tendency to pursue scarce white-collar jobs and encouraged people to embrace practical skills that can provide immediate income.
Bishop Muhiirwa explained that on Holy Thursday, Jesus instituted two sacraments: the Eucharist, which makes the celebration of Mass possible, and the Holy Orders, through which Christ authorized priests to continue His mission celebrating Mass in His memory and forgiving sins in His name. It’s from this background that many priests make themselves available in their parishes on Holy Thursday to administer the sacrament of reconciliation.
During the Mass held at Virika Cathedral, a total of 12 Christians six men and six women had their feet washed by Msgr. Isaiah Mayombo Adyeri, the Vicar General, a practice symbolizing humility, service, and love exemplified by Jesus Christ.
