As a way of creating a safer environment for children, the Diocese of Fort Portal is set to unveil a Child Protection Policy.
The document will be distributed among clergy, religious, and lay faithful involved in children’s ministry.
Addressing clergy gathered at the Bishop’s Residence yesterday to celebrate the renewal of priestly promises, Bishop Robert K. Muhiirwa Akiiki explained that the policy is intended to provide clear guidelines for reporting and responding to concerns affecting children.

He added that the document will help in building trust among parents and communities, while guiding the Diocese in fostering a safe, accountable, and respectful environment for all children.
The Bishop also echoed Fr. John Mary Vianney Makanda’s call for clergy to support the three priests (Frs. John Baptist Mwesige, Emmanuel K. Byaruhanga and John K. Tumuhairwe) celebrating their silver jubilee in priesthood, and urged them to adequately prepare for the upcoming priests’ retreat scheduled for June without giving excuses.
Earlier, during Chrism Mass at Virika Cathedral, Bishop Muhiirwa announced the creation of two new deaneries including Bugombwa Deanery, carved from Virika, and Wekomiire Deanery from Katoosa.
According to the document read by the Bishop, Bugombwa Deanery will comprise Nyahuka, Bugombwa, and Rwebisengo parishes, with Fr. Patrick Tukwasiibwe appointed as its first Dean.
Wekomiire Deanery will include Kasule, Mpara, Hapuuyo Wekomiire, Kakabara, and Butunduuzi parishes, with Fr. Christopher Kankya serving as the first Dean.
The establishment of the new deaneries is aimed at bringing Church services closer to the people and strengthening pastoral care within the Diocese.
