Fort Portal City leaders have pledged to intensify community outreach ahead of a five-day measles-rubella vaccination campaign, aiming tensure every eligible child receives the vaccine.
The campaign will run from today Thursday, 1st to 5th October 2026 and targets children aged 9 months to 5 years.
Fort Portal City Health Officer Dr. Emma Mugisa addressing city executive members and Chairperson General Purpose committee, urged Councillors to mobilise communities and encourage parents and caregivers to take responsibility for their children’s health by bringing them to vaccination posts, because the goal is to prevent measles outbreaks in the city.
He warned that 28 districts including neighboring Kagadi and Kyegegwa reported measles-rubella cases this year.
He noted that the disease spreads easily, one infected child can pass it to between 12 and 28 others in a school or community.
Annet Kabahenda, Assistant City Health Officer in charge of child health, said the city has deployed 90 vaccination teams which will administer vaccines at existing outreach sites, like schools, churches and health facilities.
