Residents of Kabundaire in Fort Portal City are decrying poor garbage disposal, saying the situation has turned the area into an environmental and health hazard.
The residents say garbage, including leftover food, polythene bags and plastic bottles, is being dumped in water channels and open spaces.
They say the waste blocks drainage channels during rainy seasons, causing stagnant water and producing a foul smell that is affecting businesses and the surrounding community.
Speaking to our reporter on Tuesday, one of the affected residents, Asiimwe Denswayo, said the suburb of Petrol City in Kabundaire is filled with garbage, which produces a bad smell, especially when it rains.
Environmental and human rights activist Musinguzi Daudi warned that if the situation is not addressed, it could affect soil fertility, food production and the health of residents.
He called on environmental authorities to work with Fort Portal City leadership to find a lasting solution to the garbage disposal problem.
Meanwhile, efforts to get a comment from the area chairperson were unsuccessful, as his known telephone contacts were unavailable by the time of filing this story.
