Talks are in advanced stages between government and opposition representatives to secure the release of jailed opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye.
According to the recent update, General Salim Saleh doubling qs the national coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation, is leading the negotiations, which began last week. They involve political figures, religious leaders and senior citizens from the ruling NRM, the People’s Front for Freedom and the Forum for Democratic Change, FDC.
A committee of eminent persons will support General Saleh, while the opposition has also formed a team to engage his group.
The FDC deputy spokesperson Walid Mulindwa who confirmed the talks, said leaders of the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue, IPOD, are also involved, and that the matter will be on the agenda when the IPOD summit meets.
However, there is no word yet on the proposed terms of Dr. Besigye’s release, or when the talks will conclude.
