Tooro Kingdom subjects have welcomed the reappointment of Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki as the interim Prime Minister (Omuhikirwa) while calling for the formal restoration and respect of the kingdom’s constitution
Alongside celebrations, local residents, youths and elders are urgently demanding the reinstallation of the kingdom’s constitution, which has remained suspended since 2012 by late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi the IV
On Monday this week at Karuzika royal palace in Fort portal city, kingdom principal private secretary Paul Nyakana announced that King Edward Rukiidi Nyabongo I had reappointed Calvin Armstrong Rwomire as interim prime minister for the six months transition period. The king also retained Charles Kamurasi as Musuuga with Kato Rwakatale serving as his deputy.
An elven member advisory committee featuring diplomats, politicians, lawyers and religious leaders tasked with steering Tooro into a brand new era has also been appointed
Counsel Thomas Kakuru a cultural, civil and political activist says, the Premier’s reappointment is a well-deserved reward for his prior track record of steering several successful development and investment projects under the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Kakuru however demand an immediate reinstatement of the 1999 Tooro Kingdom Constitution, which was suspended by the late King Oyo back in 2012.
Kakuru says the 1999 constitution which clearly outlined the administrative boundaries and powers of the kingdom’s parliament known as the Orukurato, clans, the king and designated royals was put on hold fourteen years ago to allow for amendments. The prolonged suspension sparked legal challenges and a deep rift among clan leaders over the years and most recently after the death of King Oyo because there was no clear lawful succession design
Daniel Tusiime a serving kingdom youth leader for Burahya county says, the reappointment of Rwomire will reinforce the continuity of the kingdoms 25 year development plan, continuity of the Tooro Youth Empowerment project consisting of erecting of youth centers within the nine kingdom counties with each housing a chic incubation center, nursery beds for coffee and cocoa seedlings, Masaza cup, clan tournament, king Oyo stadium among others
