The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Hon. George William Nyombi Thembo, has revealed urgent plans to transform Fort Portal Public Library into a modern information hub.
The facility will be equipped with computers and high-speed internet to enable youth, students, and researchers to conduct research and learning with ease.
The commitment follows a reminder made by the Deputy Mayor of Fort Portal City madam Kabajwara Margaret, who was representing His Worship the City Mayor at the 16th UCC Consumer Parliament held at Nyaika Hotel, Fort Portal.
The Deputy Mayor reminded the UCC Executive Director about the Mayor’s official letter that had requested at least five computers for the Fort Portal Public Library.
In his response, Hon. Nyombi Thembo pledged to go beyond the request, stating that UCC will equip the library with more than ten computers to fully turn it into a functional information hub that will serve not only Fort Portal City but the entire Rwenzori region.
He added that he will engage the Director of the Universal Service Access Fund (USAF) to expedite the process, noting that UCC has already established more than 100 similar ICT sites across the country.
