The minister for the local government Balaam Barugahara, today ordered the arrest of 7 Fort Portal City officials during the National Cleanup Day activities, accusing them of misusing taxpayer money.
The directive was made at Kabundaire Market as the Minister interacted with residents and vendors.
According to the Minister, the arrested officials are alleged to have been involved in financial mismanagement and accountability failures in the city.
The officials named by the Minister include, Ocen Ambrose the former Fort Portal City Town Clerk, Chance Kayondo the Revenue Officer, Karamagi the Chief Finance Officer plus 4 other city officials whose names were not immediately given.
According to Balaam they cannot continue to watch the public funds being misused while markets are dirty and services are poor. He ordered police to arrest these 7 officials so that investigations can begin immediately.
Balaam Barugahara, vowed to lead a campaign to expose corrupt government officials who are misusing public resources and sabotaging service delivery.
He said corruption remains the biggest obstacle to development and that he will not shield anyone, regardless of their position.
He added that he will work closely with the Inspectorate of Government, State House Anti-Corruption Unit, and the police to ensure those implicated are investigated and prosecuted.
However, Balaam directed the demolish of illegal buildings in the city and immediately they started with the one constructed in the Kanbundaire Mayor’s gardens land
